Artist Statement

Skateboarding in New York is vast and diverse in locations, many of which are unique to the city. New York skaters are creative and often find their own spaces, turning them into the "perfect runs." These spaces are where skaters of many ages come to socialize with their friends, watch other skaters, escape from their stressors in life, and even simply zone out and try to pull off their most creative tricks. The environments interact extensively, from the smooth tiled ground of Borough Hall to the makeshift obstacles of Tompkins. Skaters learn to develop different things in different spaces. This ever-growing project forms a find-it-a-map that takes the site visitor on a tour of New York Skating. As the project grows, the image-based work will depict the extensive landscape of New York City skateboarding through an immersive experience on this website.
