“Another Day”

CW: Suicide / Drug Abuse

Introduction:

This project narrative piece titled “Another Day” that explores themes of the isolating effects of depression, drug abuse, and suicide. The series is made up mostly of performative self-portraiture in which I depict suicide induced by a drug overdose. The title is important to me because it connects to the idea that when someone commits suicide it is just another day. Tying together how this issue rarely affects individuals outside of the victim’s circle and the idea that even those that see the individual on that day could have perceived it as any other day. Saturation is an important detail as it is lower in every photo until turning black and white upon death. The exception being “Overcome” which is oversaturated as it represents the high or the relief associated with the first pill. The high contrast values emphasize the intentional light choices and add to the somber tone of the pieces. A portion of the works utilizes long exposure in order to form this extra-dimensional reality making certain feelings that are invisible now observable. Titles focus heavily on the power of drug abuse and how it can be overpowering or seen as an anchor drowning the individual and the immense pressure and isolation felt in those moments, despite the viewer later seeing that they weren’t alone. What I see as my role and the importance of such intense imagery is simulating the trauma of witnessing those experiences so that it engages others in conversations on the topic

Poem 1 – Another Day
I fought my way eventually out of bed,

I got up and ready for the cause I am not yet dead,

I kept my anxieties at bay,

Because it was another day,

I ran to my errands,

I waited to hear from my friend who cares and

But I missed them and it’s okay,

Because it was another day,

I ran around trying to be the best I can,

Trying to be there for everyone when no one else can,

Even though sometimes I feel they won’t be there for me no matter what I say,

But it’s okay because it was another day,

I returned home at the end,

I decided not to press send,

I was exhausted and felt alone,

I was defeated and felt the need to atone,

I saw the bottle and an easy press and twist cap,

I saw a solution to my many continuous problems flowing like a broken tap,

Anything was easier…

Then another day.

Poem 2 – Drowning
It felt like drowning,

I just kept sinking,

Reaching to the light with no prevail,

The light waning the deeper I got,

The water becoming murky creating a veil,

I felt the weight of the world above me,

I couldn’t breathe, so I couldn’t scream,

1000 leagues under the sea,

That’s what I felt,

My body gasped for help,

I tried to stop but it was an involuntary response,

The murky cold darkness seeped into my lungs and extremities,

I could feel it envelop me,

I felt witness to my demise,

I no longer felt like it was me, every day a reprise,

Now a toy that had fallen from the shelf to be kicked around and lost,

So I stopped fighting,

So my body stopped convulsing,

Leaving my body to rest on the ocean floor,

So alone I kept an open door…

Poem 3 – The Next Day
I was too late,

Now I’ll always remember this date,

I wish I could’ve been there,

No!

I should have been there,

There is no god and there is no fate,

Cause nothing is fair and there is only hate,

Why’d you leave,

This is a dream,

Need to wake up,

Every step is heavier but feels empty,

What I could have done haunts me,

Now I feel alone,

But that’s probably how you felt,

What have I done for this pain I’ve been delivered for which I must atone,

Still, this is an ongoing nightmare,

Which is nothing like you endured … I fear.

Hüzün / Better in Tune with the Infinite
Hüzün is a concept in Turkish art that connects to an atmosphere of melancholy and is often found in Turkish literature. My work is an interpolation of these concepts to fit my observations of the contemporary environment I exist in. I reflect on my generation and my feelings about the world's current events, observing intense change while feeling dejected and separated from the rest of the world.

Putting motifs that connect to John Szarkowski's windows and mirrors, I found my interpretation where I have always felt that the window is mutually constitutive. Meaning that while the artist observes the world from the window, the window itself has reflections. Therefore, while the artist sees their reflection, the world reflects onto them. The artist's positionality sometimes being defined by the world they exist in and its constraints. These ideas are conveyed, mostly in portraiture, through chiaroscuro, spotlighting, mirrors, and windows to sub-frame isolating subjects in the images. While the work is supposed to connect to these isolated feelings of melancholy, these practices are to moreso employ this search for the individual to find positionality. My decisions with these images are to search for a place for myself. The work, in a sense, is rooted in what photography and art are, what I see as a foreign and unwelcoming world to me and challenging it. This is why film cuts can be seen in the scan, dust is left on some images, and the artifice of image-making can be seen. Historically the part of the world with ever changing denominations of central Asian / North African / Southwest Asian / Middle Eastern has been overlooked, homogenized, or regionalized as it does not fit the western hierarchy of art or feed imperialist efforts. My work connects with themes found in my ethnic background to find a place for it in the contemporary space.

My generation is simply trying to find our heaven, but I am still quite unsure where to begin looking.

Inspired by Snow by Orhan Pamuk and discussions in Punk Orientalism by Sara Raza
“Heaven was the place where you kept alive the dreams of your memories.”

I Care
(To view the separate collections click on their name)

The subject of my project is college students in particular depicted through black and white portraiture. A population of individuals which are recovering from growing pains and trauma of childhood and teenage years while simultaneously finding their identity, purpose, and holistic autonomy. This cataclysm of tasks which they must surmount can be crippling when that does not include then managing the many nuances of life. These experiences are explored through long style single interviews which dictate the composition of the portraiture of each collaborator. Images are then combined with audio through video so that the audience may have insight to the feelings of the individuals shown in this work.

I believe that this process of venting and conversation is revealing and can help individuals process the moment in time in which they exist. On the public level, while I prefer to maintain a certain level of confidentiality to my dear subjects, I find that there are feelings beyond the details of their trauma which every human can connect to and is congruent with in our lifetimes no matter the experiences which we either share or do not. It is specifically the emotions, the thoughts, and the ways we cope beyond the traumatic experiences which I want to focus on. The goal is not to make you sad or pitiful, the goal is to provide insight into this demographic’s thoughts in emerging adolescence, how humans mature in this current period, and how this generation has to manage finding time to be an adult while enjoying a fleeting youth. It is unfortunate that when the biggest concerns should be that big paper or a midterm it often is that it can be having a safe place to call home, staying financially stable, or burying our best friend which as one of my collaborators had said to paraphrase is an older person’s problem. I simply want awareness and a safe space in which individuals can see that we share many emotions and experiences and can be productive to talk about it even if we have doubts.

Anto

One of Anto’s best friends had recently passed away, and while that never was the goal of the conversation and we had discussed much of her past it always seemed to return to that subject. The poignant takeaway was that in this period of her life her friends were her family and she had come into her own, but an aspect of that crumbled when her friend passed. Anto is an unabashedly strong individual which I admire her for, but it seemed that this event had exposed her vulnerability to lack of control. The image making process for me was to highlight these moments of reflection, assessing the past and present moment. What was clear and illuminating in the project was how our lives and experiences take a forefront over academics, and even if school does not adjust our lives continue and it can be hard to keep up in the depths of tragedy. These moments center our priorities and can reveal what is important to an individual.

Ned

Ned has lived a lifetime's struggles in only a brief time and in their own words it can be very sobering. Between their states of being and environments I wanted to show how they seem to have seen a lot. These all translate to how Ned curates their identity and interactions with others in mind. This is done to keep in mind not to treat others how they've been treated in the past but also to maintain a safe distance due to fear of the unknown consequences of their true self, which they are not quite sure is being exposed. They exhibit a desire for control but also are happy with what they have now and are simply grateful to exist in the now. They are simply in search of a baseline, the mundane, or simply normalcy in the terrifying spirals of ups and downs in life that are making us grow up way too quick. I just wanted to show Ned’s presentation of self, the deepness of experience in their eyes, and how they only reveal a portion of themselves. The takeaway was very much looking at the generation as a whole in this time period and seeing how the stressors we’ve take on in life are very big for what they should be at our age.

Khanh

Khanh’s drive, identity, and hopes are strongly linked to her academic performance and ability to present herself as put together. So when she expressed how this is no longer something she can hold to be true, it engendered many hopeless feelings where she dwelled in despair. Her future seemed to disappear in front of her eyes and it seemed foolish to hold high hopes and dreams, almost in a state of learned helplessness. The image making process again depicted this state of one just dwelling in the dark, tired, and frustrated as hope seemed to wane. Khanh’s discussion made it clear that it can be hard to reassemble oneself when the root of who she is challenged and it can create an emptiness and fear of returning to state where that can again be ripped away from her.

Jeremy

Jeremy is constantly moving and thinking, so much so that he had not realized until our conversation how much he was doing and how little sleep he had in the last week. Plagued by indecision it seemed to be weighing heavy on the minimal things in immediate life creating stress. It was the larger issues which, while Jeremy admitted is not solving the problems or coping with them, which he was escaping from. Jeremy goes on walks, dreams of travel, uses the medium of photography, distracts with work and media, and has brief flings in order to escape the stressors in life. Jeremy felt too overwhelmed to address his feelings in the moment again, time seems to move on without concern for us. I attempted to translate this into the images following Jeremy on his morning walk using the environment to symbolize the chaos in his mind and life. Jeremy simply seems to be in search of an environment which allows him to be happy with himself whether that be his queer identity or simply his interests.
